RUDIMENTS you should know (VOLUME ONE)

Music varies in definition from time to time in different parts of the world. It differs such that one part of the world has a usual way of producing music varying from the way some other part will do it. For example, what in Africa is enjoyed as music may in Asia, be considered meaningless due to cultural, social and some other factors creating diversity in music (Ethnomusicology problems).

Some in attempt to define Music say ‘It is a way of life’, ‘It is a means of communication’ and even Encarta 2009 -Although there is no general agreement as to exactly what music communicates or how it communicates it, some individuals and governments have believed that music possesses great powers of communication.’ Establishing from different perspective, how people understands this concept.

However, this article aims at achieving a unique and yet comprehensive definition.

MUSIC is the combination of pleasant sounds across time (rhythm) with proper rests (or silence) to produce a desired effect.

ESSENTIALS OF MUSIC
There are three (3) distinct words, as you might have noticed in the definition above, these are; SOUNDS, TIME and RESTS. Without proper rests and pleasant sounds across time, good music cannot be produced. For emphasis, time as a standard measure, guides both rests and sounds.

SOUND

Sound needs to be produced to make music, either through human’s voice (vocal cords) or vibrations from musical instruments. Sounds can be produced through any means but it is pleasant when well arranged and skilfully combined.

Whichever way we choose, vibration is of essence to produce sounds.
Our concern now is not how sounds are produced, the article on how sounds are produced; 'Harmony - amplified Overtones', will be posted later but how to make pleasant sound to give desired effect is our major concern.

NOTES OR KEYS
In music, the first seven English alphabets are used to denote Notes. A, B, C, D, E, F and are used in Music as notes. A Note is a sound of distinct pitch. A pitch is a ...

particular frequency of a single note.
